you want liberty," claimed Garvey to a meeting held in 1921, "you
yourselves must strike the blow. If you must be free, you must become so
through your own effort." But Garvey knew African Americans would not take action if they did not change their
perceptions of themselves. He hammered home the idea of racial pride by
celebrating the African past and encouraging African Americans to be
proud of their heritage and proud of the way they looked. Garvey
proclaimed "black is beautiful" long before it became popular in the
1960s. He wanted African Americans to see themselves as members of a
