The Venice of Africa Ganvié, often called the “Venice of Africa,” is a remarkable lake village in Benin built almost entirely on the waters of Lake Nokoué. Instead of streets, the community moves by canoe, with homes, markets, schools, and everyday life unfolding across a network of waterways. Its stilted architecture and floating commerce give Ganvié a visual rhythm unlike almost anywhere else on the continent. But Ganvié is more than a picturesque destination. The village was founded centuries ago by the Tofinu people, who settled on the lake as a refuge from slave raiders.
